Luxury Vinyl Plank Installation Guide for Central PA Homeowners

If you want a durable, water-resistant, low-maintenance floor that looks like wood or stone without the upkeep, LVP is usually the simplest, fastest flooring project you can do. Most rooms are completed in 1–2 days once the subfloor is ready.

When LVP makes sense

LVP works well almost anywhere in the house, kitchens, basements, laundry rooms, and high-traffic living areas, because it's waterproof at the plank level and holds up to pets and kids better than most hard flooring. This makes it a common choice for Central PA basements that see occasional dampness.

LVP makes less sense if you're chasing resale value in a higher-end home where buyers expect solid or engineered hardwood, or if you want a floor that can be refinished decades from now. In those cases, engineered hardwood is usually the better call.

Click-lock vs. glue-down installation

Most Central PA LVP installs use a click-lock floating system: planks snap together over a thin underlayment without fasteners or adhesive. It installs in 1–2 days, tolerates minor subfloor imperfections, and is the easier of the two to repair a damaged plank later.

Glue-down LVP costs more in labor and prep time because the subfloor needs to be nearly perfectly flat and clean, but it feels more solid underfoot and is often preferred in commercial-grade or high-moisture basement applications.

What gets installed in a typical LVP job

A standard scope includes removal of the old flooring, subfloor inspection and minor leveling, underlayment or moisture barrier, plank installation, transition strips at doorways, and baseboard or shoe molding reinstallation. Anything beyond that, major subfloor leveling, stair nosing, or furniture moving, is usually a line item, not assumed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an LVP installation take?+

Click-lock LVP in a typical 300–400 sq ft area usually takes 1–2 days once the subfloor is ready. Glue-down installs or jobs needing significant subfloor leveling can take longer.

Is LVP actually waterproof?+

The plank itself is waterproof, but standing water at seams or edges can still find its way to the subfloor over time if it's not cleaned up. LVP handles spills and everyday moisture far better than laminate or hardwood.

Can LVP go over existing tile or hardwood?+

Often yes, as long as the existing floor is flat, stable, and not more than about 1/4 inch out of level over 10 feet. A site visit is needed to confirm, and height changes at doorways may require a transition strip.
