Where the water actually goes

Tile itself doesn't absorb water, but grout lines do unless sealed, and the substrate underneath is only protected if a waterproofing membrane sits between the tile and the subfloor. In a shower or a floor near a floor drain, that membrane is mandatory, not optional.

LVP is waterproof at the plank, but it's a floating or glued floor with seams between planks, and standing water can find its way to the subfloor at those seams over time, especially near a washing machine hookup or a tub. Neither material is a substitute for proper waterproofing where standing water is likely.

Comfort, maintenance, and slip resistance

Tile with a textured or matte finish generally offers better slip resistance when wet than a smooth LVP surface, which is why many codes and designers still favor tile for shower floors specifically, even when LVP handles the surrounding room.

Powder rooms, laundry rooms without a floor drain, and mudrooms are strong candidates for LVP, where the water exposure is splashes and tracked-in moisture rather than standing water.

Installation and subfloor requirements

Tile needs a rigid, flat substrate (cement board or an uncoupling membrane over plywood) or it will crack over time as the subfloor flexes. LVP is more forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections but still needs a flat surface within about 3/16" over 10 feet to lock together properly and avoid seam gaps.

For a bathroom floor outside the shower, yes, LVP handles splashes and spills without damage. For the shower floor itself, tile over a proper waterproofing membrane is still the standard; LVP isn't designed to be a shower pan surface.

Do I need to seal grout in a wet room?+

Yes, on a 1–2 year schedule for most sealers, longer for epoxy grout. Unsealed grout absorbs water and stains and can allow moisture through to the substrate over time.

Which is cheaper for a full bathroom remodel floor?+

LVP, typically by half or more compared to tile once you factor in the waterproofing membrane, thinset, and grout labor that tile requires. The tradeoff is slip resistance and long-term water tolerance right at the shower drain.

Can I mix tile and LVP in the same bathroom?+

Yes, and it's common: tile inside the shower and on the shower floor, LVP or a different tile on the rest of the bathroom floor. A properly detailed transition strip or threshold at the shower curb keeps the two materials separated and watertight.
